In North America alone, 100,000 horses are slaughtered every year from all walks of life including wild horses, show horses, race horses, etc. (People even go to such lengths as stealing just to make money) Although the bill passed by American senate illegalized horse slaughter Canada and Mexico still take part in this cruel act. Horse meat is shipped overseas to Belgium, Italy, France, Japan among other countries.
Now you may be thinking why should I care if it's happening in other countries? It's important to care because horses are treated more horridly then other livestock that are processed. Imagine being a 1200 pound animal being shoved around at an auction then into a cramped steel double deck trailer where you either freeze or burn alive for at least 20 hours or more depending on the trip. If you are lucky to even survive that, you are taken to a plant where they unload you into a paddock with no food or water for another day before you are lined up to spend your last moments in a box getting your head bolted and if you are lucky enough to go unconcious then you won't have to worry about being bled out when you are wide awake and upside down. The rest is history....
American horse auctions STILL take part in allowing these 'Killer Buyers' into the auction house to purchase horses for as low as five-and-a-quarter just to be processed. Normally these buyers are meat men brokers for the slaughter houses out of the country and you can always spot their big rigs lined up at the barns waiting. At race tracks, meat men scower the stables looking for a horse that trainers do not want anymore just because the poor animal didn't win a race.
The most famous story of a race horse going to slaughter was the 1986 Kentucky Derby winner, Ferdinand who met his fate in 2002 after not producing foals with good quality was slaughtered in a Japanese slaughterhouse when the American owners and trainer were told that he was going to be gelded and used at a riding club in Japan. Since his death, the Ferdinand Fee has been set into place where if an American horse was stationed in Japan for whatever reason then if they had no more use of that animal it was to be sent back to America or put up for adoption.
And now you are wondering where am I going with this rant. Well, it is found out in this video (See below) that a slaughterhouse in Juarez, Mexico is selling horse meat disguised as beef to over 95% of unsuspecting American companies.
WARNING: Video contains graphic imagery so if you are uncomfortable watching that sort of stuff then don't watch! You have been warned.
So the next time you order beef at work or school... be aware that you may be getting more than you expect. Now, If you think that horse slaughter is something that everyone must be aware of like I do and you actually care about the outcomes of these amazing animals that have given us so much then please repost this to get the message out there.
